ABOUT
Marie McCallum was born in Los Angeles, CA and studied painting at Otis College of Art and Design and Sign Graphics at Los Angeles Trade Tech.  McCallum pursued a career in the sign industry as a sign artist and gilder and later as a sign sales rep in the LA area.  She started painting full time as an artist in 2000.

Thinking graphically and painting in a realistic style is a natural for McCallum.  Her technique is informed by her training in trompe l'oeil painting.   Her work is dynamic and vibrant with a perspective that pulls the viewer in and allows them to immediately sense a familiarity with the subject matter.  The award winning painter has exhibited in galleries and numerous shows in California, Colorado, Arizona and New Mexico.

STATEMENT

I am interested in our urban environment and the ways in which we are engaged by it.  Advertising, storefronts and establishments are all vying for our attention and business.  These things are not new, and have been around since cities first sprang up in antiquity.  I’m drawn to the ways in which advertising and signage can entice the viewer, creating an atmosphere that makes one want to be included. My work also explores themes related to identity and self- image.  Dress shop windows hold the mysterious possibilities of who we might become inside those clothes, poised in the window for our fantasy’s sake.  These stimuli are ever present in our modern world.
